Taekwondo Campout in Horde Creek Lake Texas with Chip

Hello Everyone

Well this is my last blog from Texas as I am coming home tomorrow (Monday). I can’t wait to get back to see everyone and share my stories with all of you. I will just write a brief description of what we did at campout. Too much stuff to completely type everything out.

So on Friday Chip and I left early to go get the trailer and headed to Horde Creek Lake. We got there and set up the trailer. We waited for everyone else to arrive and we set up camp for the weekend. We had a little meet and greet in the evening before we went to bed to get ready for a earlier start Saturday morning.

Saturday morning we got up at 5:30am for a 6am workout down by the dam. We worked out for about 2 hours before returning to the camp site for breakfast. After breakfast we did about 2 hours and 30 minutes of working out with 5 sub workouts. First station was lots of coaching mitt drills with Glyn Ann Townsend. That was a lot of fun. Second station was bag kicking with Kyle Johnson. I liked all the simple but effective combos. Third station was Kicking shields and self defense with Chip Townsend. He is an awesome kicker. A person i want to kick like. Fourth station was Paddle licking with Ben Parra. Excellent usage of the paddles. And the last station was Balance drills and listening drills with Kiki D’Aniel. She has excellent balancing.

After lunch we did some free sparring for a while. Black Belts against colour belts, and Black Belts against Black belts. I got to spar against Steve Fisher, a 2nd Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo and ISKA World Championship competitor. I also sparred Master Greg Gafford. That was an awesome experience as it was two WTF guys sparring. He said I moved around good. Everyone sparred really good. Next there was drills in the sand and then drills in the water. I took lots of pictures of that and will post it on facebook soon.

After a quick break we did self defense with master Greg Gafford. That was cool. He is very lnowledgable and humble about his skills. After that the Black Belts did some running and training by the gates.

Sunday morning we got up at 6:30am for a 7am workout by the dam once again. I did a lot of focus on stretching. i got really stretched out with a partner. Awesome. Then we did another workout after breakfast with lots of stretching again. Probably got the best stretch out of my life. Then the workout focused on kicking control. After that we took some group pictures and finished with tug a war. Final one was Black Belts versus colour belts were the Black belts won and broke the rope in the process. Then we all cleaned up the camp ground and left.

It was an awesome weekend. Thanks to Chip Townsend, Glyn Ann Townsend, Greg  Gafford, and everyone else at the campout. It was a lot of hard work, learning, and fun. I can’t wait to tell everyone my stories in person.

Catcha later,

Master Jonathan Field

  1. Looking forward to your return. I can’t wait to here all your stories and to share in your experience. Sounds like you met a terrific set of people down south. It can be challenging to get a different perspective when you run a club since you seldom get the opportunity to see other ways of teaching.
Hopefully what you have learned won’t be taught to us in too painful a way.
