We need not worry too much as everything on this planet and in this life is temporary.

Life of it self is temporary.

Everything we see, smell, touch, hear, and taste is temporary.

Everything that we can imagine and envision is temporary.

All of man’s creations are temporary.

Our thoughts, memories, feelings, emotions, and so forth is temporary.

Relationships and friendships are temporary.

Knowing that nothing lasts forever is very powerful.

Very powerful in the sense that we can learn to enjoy everything while it last and nothing is forever.

We must learn to treat every moment as something to be cherished for it is temporary and will never come again.

Everything we are given only last for a brief moment in order for us to learn to be in the moment and cherish that moment and only that moment.

You can’t worry about the past and it is gone. You cannot worry about the future for it robs you of the now. Focus merely on the moments for they are beautiful but still only temporary.

Good Morning

Hope everyone had a good long weekend and got all rested up. Hope everyone also had a good night’s sleep because you shoulder never under estimate the power of a good sleep.

We all need to get a good amount of quality sleep to maintain our good health as well as to function in a cheerful way each and every day. We require a certain amount of sleep each night. You always hear about eight hours a night. That is not really the case. You actually need to pay attention to your sleep cycles. Each sleep cycle is 90 minutes in length. So you need to time your sleep so you actually get 7.5 hours or 9 hours of sleep. Not eight hours of sleep because it will disturb your last sleep cycle and make you feel more tired when you wait up on the morning.

Just having rest time each day and each week is very important. Your mind and body can only take so much before it starts to burn out. I myself am known for being a person who puts in 14 hour work days for 5 days a week plus works Saturdays and Sundays during the bust seasons here at Cobourg Tae Kwon Do. I do not mind one bit but I do enjoy the rest times. The long weekends where I do nothing and just enjoy relaxing. When I do not get a chance to do this I feel tired and short tempered sometimes. This is when I know I have to take a few days to rest or I could risk burning out. This can happen to anyone and it happens all the time to a lot of people.

Being too busy is not a good thing. You need to take the time to rest. Your body needs it but more importantly your mind needs it. Schedule down time during the day so you can get a few minutes here and there to rest up. Make sure you are getting enough sleep at night. Make sure you get chance to relax on the weekends and during the holidays. There needs to be a balance between work and rest. Find your balance.

Cheaters may pick up the odd win. Get that medal or trophy that they so long for. Get one up over another competitor that played by the rules. But do cheaters really win?

Well the answer is pretty obvious. No! No they did not win. Just because a cheater got that trophy, medal, or victory down on paper doesn’t mean that actually won. You see, when someone has to cheat in order to gain  victory they are not actually winning. Once they feel they have to cheat and act upon those feelings they are starting to cheat themselves of a true victory.

True victory is not over someone else or winning at a competition. No, true victory is about being the best that you can become. Once you decide to cheat and actually do it you are robbing yourself of this. You are saying to yourself that you are not any good. You are saying that you cannot do what you set out to do. You are saying that others are better than you. You are telling yourself that the only way you can win is to cheat. You don’t have what it takes to be a real winner.

This is why cheaters are never really winners. They are cheating themselves. It is better bad to cheat others but it is so much worse to cheat yourself. Negative self talk and self doubt can really play with you. And not in a good playful way but rather in a bad dark way.

I have met hundreds and hundreds of competitors in the martial arts over the years and I have cane across many true champions who sometimes win and sometimes lose but that is okay. That is okay because they layer by the rules and were trying to be the best that they could be. They knew no matter what happens they were winning because they weren’t cheating themselves or anyone else in the process. They know that sometimes you wins and sometimes you learn. They can sleep at nights knowing they were true to themselves.

I have over the years met some competitors who were cheaters. They tried to find ways to get that one win over someone else at pretty much at all cost. They didn’t care how they won, as long as they got that medal or trophy and the bragging rights to say I won over so and so. What they don’t realize is that in the long run, no one cares but them. A win or lost is a personal thing. It is of no concern to anyone else. And what good is a win if it is not real? And why would anyone want a room full of fake trophies and medals? Wouldn’t it be a reminder that you are fake?

All the greatest competitors I know have rooms full of 1st place trophies and medals but they also have many ends, 3rds, 4ths, and so forth. They are proud of each and every win and lost because at least it was real. You can always be proud of yourself if every time you compete you were true to yourself and you tried your very best. Regardless of the outcome of that particular day or event it has no real bearing on you expect maybe that you are a true competitor and competed with integrity. I believe this is more important than all the 1st places in the world.

I have World Championships, World Records, International Championships, but I also have many 2nd places, 3rd places, 4th places, and so forth. I am proud of each one regardless of the place I won because there is a story behind each one. Good memories behind each ones. Hard work and passion behind each one. I stayed true to who I am. I will gladly take a lost over a fake win. I realize that in the long run that it only matters to me. No one else really cares. It is something personal that drives me to become better. I strive to pass this along to the next generations of competitors and students alike. To see another competitor or student go through this process like I have is very rewarding. It is rewarding that I see that they are staying true to themselves and not becoming cheaters. They know that if they cheat, they never win. They know that cheating is only cheating themselves.

Good Morning

I posted this on my Facebook account yesterday as it was on my mind from the day before as I discussed this with my competition team. Now the following is not my absolute opinion or thoughts as I could go on and on for hours. I could also spend hours having an open discussion about it as well. This simply serves as a thumbnail sketch on the topic. Hope you get something out of it.

A person’s character is defined by what one does and not necessarily what one says they are going to do or what one says who they are. True character is being their original self and not stealing others’ ideas, talents, identity, character traits, and so on. They say imitating is the highest form of flattery unless someone steals from others only to make themselves look better and to make those they steal from worse. True character is having confidence in their own self and not having to use someone else’s name to put yourself up. True character is not trying to tare someone down in order for you to look better than you really are. True character is playing by the rules and not searching for wears to cheat in order to win over those that play by the rules. When one cheats, they may end up winning but in reality they lose every time because they are ultimately cheating themselves and living a lie. True character is taking the resources that they have been given and help others and not to be selfish and use for strictly their own personal gains. When in a position to help out many people, one should be selfless and use resources for what they re meant for. True character is accepting what is and not blaming others for the outcomes in which you may encounter because of your down falls. Take the blame and move forward. True character is standing up for yourself yet not when you feel you don’t have to follow the rules that everyone has too. True character is not about how many wins or loses you have. It is not about being seen a great person. It is not about obtaining as many material possessions as you can. It is not about showing off to others. It is not about elevating yourself over others. No, it is quite the opposite. It is about being humble. About working hard. About playing by the rules. About being true to yourself and who you really are. Being a kind person. A person who can inspire others through true acts of character without any thought of self imagery. Not doing so is simply cheating yourself.

Good Morning

I came across the following quote yesterday and I thought I would share it. It is very true to pretty much everything that we all go through. It reminds us that we just need to relax sometimes and just get through it.

Are you teachable? Are you coachable?

Are you still willing to learn new things every day? Are you willing to experience and try new things?

In order to grow in life and grow in anything you pursue you must be willing to be teachable.

Without being teachable you simply stop growing. When you stop growing you start to die.

When you are surrounded by people that know more than you do in certain areas of expertise, listen to what they have to say.

Some stuff will click right away for you while others things will make you a little uncomfortable. That is okay. Growth is not about being comfortable. You tend to grow the most when you are uncomfortable.

Being teachable is a habit and a willingness to learn and be uncomfortable.

Do you ever have those days where you have a ton of tasks that need to be completed that day and you feel like you won’t accomplish everything?

It can feel a little overwhelming from time to time. Racking your brain over how could you possibly get everything done. How is it possible?

Well for starters, worry not. Things that need to get done just seem to get done.

Second, all you have to do is plan things out. Planning helps eliminate failure but if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

How you plan is by simply making a list of everything you have to do. Then you just start working away at the list until you have accomplished everything.

And the list does not have to be complicated. Simply writing out a simple list of things to get done on a piece of paper is quite good.

Everyday I will have like 20-30 things that need to get done each day. I will wonder how I will get it all done. So I write a list so I don’t forget anything and then I just go through it. Completing one task at a time until the list gets done.

It may seem a little too simple but it works. Give it a try. What’s the wort that can happen? You get a done of stuff done?!

There is time to talk and then there is time to just do it.

A certain amount of talk is required but he it is time to get the work done, just get it done.

There is such a thing as too much talk and not enough work getting done.

When this happens you just gotta stop talking and get it done!

Too much talking can lead to nothing getting done. Too but working without the talking can accomplish very little as well.

There must be a balance between the two but they must be separated when the time comes for each of the two tasks.

When it’s time to get the work done, just do it!

Good Morning

I came across this quote the other day and thought I would share it with all of you. The statement is very true when it comes to your life. Life is an expression of art. You are always in the process of creating it. Every single breathe you take you are drawing. You cannot erase only create. It is up to you to create the pictures you want to cherish later.

12733541_10153222497532000_7692317679727266756_nIf it’s both terrifying and amazing then you should definitely pursue it.

This is where a lot of great things happen in our lives.

The things that are out of our comfort zone.

The things that scare the living daylights out of you yet the results would be amazing if you just did it.

I think people are more afraid of success than they are of failure. Therefore they don’t even try.

If they just do nothing, they can’t fail or succeed.

Those that face those terrifying chances and opportunities do find out how amazing things turn out.

You never quite know what is going to happen or how you are truly going to feel until you take that leap of faith and just go for it.

Pursue the things that are amazing to you yet terrify you to even think about doing them. Imagine how you will feel when you accomplish them.

And sometimes the journey of the pursuit alone is the amazing part.
