ZEN HAS NOTHING TO GRAB ON TO – ZEN

” Zen has nothing to grab on to. When people who study Zen don’t see it, that is because they approach too eagerly. “

Basically sometimes we can be so eager to find something that we overlook the obvious. Other times we have such narrow vision on one thing we miss out on what we should be really looking at. Don’t approach too eagerly. Approach with calmness and openness.

WHEN THE DAY GETS LONG – ZEN

” When the day gets long and contentious, I hold fast to my breath as a tiller and take each wave as it comes. “

This refers to patience. Throughout each day we are all tested with lots of contentious situations. Best to stay calm as best we can and approach each situation with a clear mind. This takes practice. And some circumstances are harder to stay calm than others but it is worth a shot. Keep practicing.

ABOVE ALL, DON’T WOBBLE – ZEN

” In walking, just walk. In sitting, just sit. Above all, don’t wobble. “

This seems simple enough. Basically be in the present moment and just do what you are doing. You will wobble when you are doing one thing and your focus os on something else. Mainly the past or future. Focus on the now.

Now that’s a practice that takes practice.

IF YOU SEEK – ZEN

” If you seek, how is that different from pursuing sound and form? If you don’t seek, how are you different from earth, wood, stone? You must seek without seeking. “

Hmm well that’s interesting, yes?

Seek, or no seek?  Pursue or not to pursue?  Be still or move forward?

EVEN ONE WORD IS TOO MUCH – ZEN

” When you are deluded and full of doubt, even a thousand books of scripture are not enough. When you have realized understanding, even one word is too much. “

Everyone will have their own thoughts as to what this may mean. For me particular it is saying that when you are afraid of not knowing enough you seek out all the information you can get your hands on and that still won’t help you any. For those who truly learned the basics concepts, theories, and principles when a basic word can spark so much new self discovered knowledge. There is no such thing as advanced theories, concepts, and what nots. There is only an advanced way of looking at and using basics.

A GREAT WIND – ZEN

” Sometimes I go about in pity for myself, and all the while a great wind is bearing me across the sky. “

Basically you may feel bad about yourself or your situation and in reality things aren’t that bad. They could be worst. Know that bad times in your life are nothing more than mere moments that will pass and you will move on to greater things.
