TRAINING GOOD SO FAR/VICTORIA DAY

Good Morning

Well so far the training for my 6th degree black belt is going well. Starting out slowly and will build up the intensity as time goes on. This way I don’t burn myself out early and I can peak at the right moment. Proper training is really a fine tuned science that you have to learn very carefully. Going through three 40 hour black belt gradings I have learned what works and what does not work. What beats your body up and what doesn’t. I know what it’s like to be at the breaking point then push beyond it to new limits.

I feel really good right now because preparing for my next grading gives me a new set of goals and a focus to work towards. Having focus and goals is important when one wants to work on mastery of anything they do.

Also we will be closed on Monday May 23rd for Victoria Day. No regular classes. However we will be doing the annual team building day for the 2016 Black Belt Candidates. This is an opportunity for the candidates to work on their testing requirements together as well as learn to be leaders.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS FOR MY 6TH DEGREE BLACK BELT

Good Morning

Well the journey begins for me to earn my 6th degree black belt. Well actually it started after I earned my 5th degree black belt or more specifically it actually started when I first earned my white beret. But this part of my journey to earn my 6th degree started yesterday. The day after I met up with my Master to go over all the testing requirements. Lots of physical requirements to complete as well as lots of mental and personal requirements to work through as well.

I started yesterday on the easy side and I will build myself up from there one day at a time. One step at a time. If you look after the small steps, the journey of a 1,000 miles doesn’t seem so huge. I will tell you though that when looking at all that has to be accomplish before my grading in May 2017, it is a lot! It’s a huge challenge but I am up for the task. I know I can do it because I will focus on completing each step and each day one at a time. The genius lies in the process and not in the end destination. My journey to 6th degree is not about obtaining the new belt or rank but the transformation I go through in the process of the journey.

I am not alone in this journey as there will be six other students that will be going through their own journeys to obtain the ranks that they will be testing for. Although many may come along for the journey, the journey is still yours alone to take. As well as each of their journeys is their’s alone as well. There may be times when each other needs a little help or guidance but they alone has to go through it. They have to be disciplined enough to push through when the motivation to do so seems not to be there from day to day, moment to moment.

I look forward to this new journey, this new part of my life over the next year. It will not be easy. It will be challenging me and forcing myself to step out of my comfort zone but that is okay. Being outside the comfort zone and striving for Mastery is where the true genius lies.

TAEKWONDO, SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

cobourg tae kwon doLast night one of my adult students posted on Facebook asking her taekwondo friends what their favourite tad thing was. There was plenty of replies including my own. All the replies had various answers of what everyone liked. Some were the same and others were not. However what was the same was the passion and love they all have for taekwondo.

What this shows is that Taekwondo has something for everyone.

Whether you do Taekwondo for the great intense workouts where you are dripping sweat or for the calming effects that doing forms can cause. Or perhaps the self confidence you receive while learning to defend yourself. Our the self accomplishments when you smash through a pile of boards. That feeling you get when you strikes pads or kick the paddles. That sound the heavy bags make when you land a great kick. The smiles and laughters from all the fun you are having training with your tad family. It’s a great feeling every time you come to class.

Taekwondo offers so many different things to train in; patterns/forms, one steps(han buns), kicking, punching, combos, self defense, sparring, weapons, breaking, competitions, physical conditioning, partner drills, solo drills, group drills, and on and on…

Man I am loving my/our Taekwondo academy and all the instructors and students here. We train hard but we also have a lot of fun. People you may have never met otherwise become good friends. Great quality training and the right training environment will do this.

I will say we are all blessed!

EACH NEW BELT IS A STEP

When training in Taekwondo and Martial Arts you earn various colures belts and various degrees of black belt.

Each one of these colours or degrees is a step.

A step in which you learn new skills in the martial arts.

But also with each step taken, you learn and gain experiences which will serve you not only as a martial artist but as a person on this earth.

You learn to overcome barriers and limitations which at one point you thought you would not overcome.

You learn how to trust your instincts to help with your judgment.

You learn to let go and trust in the natural process in which training naturally provides.

You gain self confidence and self respect through lots of practice.

You learn to focus more clearly on what is most important and with clarity.

But none of this happens if you don’t allow it to. It won’t happen if you fight the process. It never happens if you are too busy talking when you should be listening, doing, and experiencing.

Good things will happen because of your dedication to training but you have allow it to happen and not think too much. Nor fight it.

Your martial rte training is a metaphor for your life. Your training experiences should reflect your life to some extent.

I often see this a lot. I can see how people’s lives are like based on their training.

I get to witness a lot of the time the training improving the lives of the trainees.

And sometimes I get to see how their lives impact their training.

Most of it is good and a little bit I have see that is not so good.

Approach your training as single positive steps one after the other and you will see the difference it makes.

MEANINGS TO THE DIFFERENT COLOUR OR RANKS OF BELTS

From White Belt to Black belt

From White Belt to Black belt

In Taekwondo as well as most style of Martial Arts you will find white belts, black belts, various colours of colour belts, and various degrees of black belt as well as various degrees of certain ranks of colour. But what do they all mean?

Various styles of different orders of colure which you earn along your way to black belt and beyond. Some styles go white belt, yellow belt, and so forth. Other styles go white belt, red belt, yellow belt, and so forth. Others use red belts as higher than black belts. Some use stripes on their belts. Some use different colure such as purple and brown where others don’t.

Some systems will go into detail about how each belt represents certain things in nature or human nature. Some will be described as the learning process in which you go through as person. Some styles use ranks to show nothing other than progression of skill and knowledge. Some systems the ranks are meaningless.

It would be hard press to find two styles that can come together and completely agree with what the belts mean and what it takes to earn each belt. This is because there is so many different unique view points on the subject. And that is okay. That is actually a good thing. The more view points the more one can learn.

Ultimately the different ranks means that you have learned new skills per belt level and meet the minimum requirements to progress to the next level. They are mini goals towards black belt and beyond. You can view them as a metaphor for life. Always learning something new. Always challenging yourself to be better. Always improving. Always setting goals and achieving them. Stepping stones in life.

And black belt is not the ultimate goal. Going beyond black belt is not the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is striving to be better than you were yesterday. Taekwondo is one path to self excellence through hard work and dedication.

FLEXIBILITY IS IMPORTANT

055c9b4e1a27c7888024470efc5177baFlexibility is important. Both physically and mentally.

But we are talking about being flexible physically today.

Being flexible helps prevents injuries from sports, athletics, and everyday activities.

Being flexible helps with your strength and power. The ability to move your muscles and joints in a full range of motion allows everything to maximize their proficiency.

Having good flexibility allows you to age slower. The more you move your body in great ranges of motion, the slower the body ages where it cannot move youthful anymore.

Stretching on a daily basis can help reduce your physical and mental stress.

Being flexible just makes you feel better because you can move with grace and with no effort. Movement never becomes a chore when you don’t have to limit any range of motion due to lack of mobility.

Stretching everyday is important to our wellbeing. You don’t have to go hard at it. You don’t have to take it to pain. Stretching should be enjoyable and you can decide how challenging you want it based on your goals. Do you want to be the most flexible person you know or do you just want a full range of motion without any pain or limitations of mobility. It’s a personal choice. You can decide whether you want to spend only a few minutes a day working on your flexibility and mobility or you can stretch out more much long each day. Make it a daily ritual. Stretching can become a time of day where you take care of yourself in a quiet manner. It is almost like moving meditation.

Stretching is a very personal thing that competition should never come into play. Ego should never come into play as well. Stretching is something that is pure and selfish at the same time.

If you are not stretching or working on your flexibility each day, why not? And if you need some help getting started, please let me know and I can help you get started.
